Unmanned Aircraft System (Drone) Policy

To maintain the safety, security, and privacy of the Berkeley campus community and to ensure compliance with applicable laws, unmanned aircraft systems (also known as drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, model airplanes, quadcopters, or flying robots, but for clarity’s sake referred to henceforth as drones) will be used on campus in accordance with the conditions set forth in this policy. This policy does not apply to use of drones in off-campus locations such as field stations and other areas within the University’s Natural Reserve System. In those areas, the relevant field station or reserve manager will approve any proposed drone use in compliance with applicable laws and policies.

Hazardous Materials Shipping and Transportation

It is the policy of the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) to ship and transport hazardous materials (sometimes referred to as “dangerous goods”) safely and in compliance with the rules and regulations promulgated by the US Department of Transportation (US DOT), the International Air Transportation Association (IATA), and other regulatory agencies.

Post-Earthquake Building Evaluation

Establishes a protocol for effectively evaluating buildings following a seismic event and communicating the evaluation data to campus leadership, in order to ensure that appropriate resources are brought to bear immediately following a seismic event and to shorten the time needed to return to business as usual.

Deficit Resolution

All funds must be spent in accordance with University policy. Authority to spend funds brings with it the responsibility for effective fiscal management. All units should meet operating needs within their available budget. All deficits in University of California, Berkeley current, loan, and plant funds should be cleared throughout the year and must be cleared by the close of the fiscal year. Deficits may be resolved by either transferring budgeted funds between chartstrings within the same fund group or by transferring expenditures between chartstrings, if allowable.

Activities Involving Minors

The University of California, Berkeley is committed to providing a safe environment for minors. Campus units that supervise activities involving minors will abide by the principles and procedures described below. Minors will be treated respectfully at all times, regardless of their actions or behavior. No adult associated with a campus activity involving minors may use physical punishment to manage a minor’s behavior. Physical or sexual abuse of minors will not be tolerated.

Water Protection

Establishes roles and responsibilities for protecting and enhancing the environmental quality of state and local waterways in accordance with the federal Clean Water Act, the state Porter- Cologne Water Quality Control Act, other federal, state, and local regulations, and other campus policies.

Cal 1 Card Policy

The Cal 1 Card – UC Berkeley's official photo ID card – was designed to provide a standardized and secure medium via which active members of the campus community identify their affiliation and their respective eligibility for access to applicable campus services, benefits, and facilities. Use of the Cal 1 Card, its data elements, and all associated card technologies – including all hardware and software leveraging or interfacing with said technologies – must be pre-approved by the Cal 1 Card Program, Campus Facility Services, the Office of the Registrar, and/or Berkeley People & Culture as applicable.

Allocation of Electrical Capacity

This policy describes the process and requirements for allocating available electrical capacity to new capital projects. The campus has a specific amount of electrical capacity available within its existing high voltage infrastructure. Exceeding this capacity will necessitate the construction, well in advance of the need, of additional substations on campus property and added service from the utility supplier. In order to avoid this investment as long as possible, it is essential that the existing capacity be allocated judiciously to support campus priorities.

Fire Safety

Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. Certain campus units are assigned special responsibilities in relation to fire safety. This policy establishes responsibilities to ensure that fire safety systems are available, tested, maintained, and effective, and that conditions potentially leading to fires are properly abated.

Energy Use

The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) will manage its operations so that energy and carbon is used in the most sustainable manner possible while providing a safe and comfortable environment for teaching, research, and public service.
